THE CHUCK’S MULE ON MICHIGAN AVENUE

My first sip of this mule at initial taste, was typical. However I decided to let the cocktail sit for a moment, allowing the ingredients to more naturally infuse with one another. My next sip was absolutely exquisite! The classic flavor of a traditional Moscow mule cocktail influenced my taste buds with the delight of a refreshing summer beverage.

Right on Michigan Ave., if you’re perceptive, you’ll notice a very swanky glass ornament-of-a-restaurant called: Chuck’s A Kerry Simon Kitchen. You can choose to enter their luxurious ambient atmosphere in-doors, or simply ask to be seated on the patio to enjoy some city-watching right on the Magnificent Mile. The musical selections well suit the up-scale experience. During this visit, I exclusively stopped by to review their Moscow mule cocktail and take-in the ambience of the restaurant.

As my taste buds continued to thank me for the traditional, refreshing flavor party, I quickly discerned that this cocktail was easily a 4.7 out of 5-star mule. I was overjoyed that this visually enticing restaurant did not spare the expense of the copper cup! The Chuck’s Mule on Michigan Ave. was crafted with Tito’s Handmade Vodka and top-of-the-line ginger beer. Mindful attention and care was observed by the mixologist, because the mule never got watered down, instead the Chuck’s Mule kept its traditional flavor for an entire 15 minutes of summer sun! (That’s one of the benefits of serving a mule cocktail in a copper cup; beverages are colder, longer).

Upon my final sips of the cocktail, a very small buzz finally kicked-in. This is definitely a great restaurant to introduce a lovely lady to the Moscow Mule Cocktail because the buzz she’ll receive isn’t as heavy as many other restaurants, but the flavor is remarkable. If the flavor is excellent enough, people tend to order a second mule, and that’s when the buzz can be picked up notch.

As I requested the bill, my server, Anthony, politely smiled at me and told me this mule is on the house. This is the FIRST restaurant to extend a gesture of hospitality and gratitude after I explain that I will review the cocktail and my experience on the Metropolitan Mule website.  I think the gesture spoke volumes to the unified integrity of this Kerry Simon Kitchen, and their appreciation of all customers. Workers here truly care about your experience, not just your tip, and setting tables. The Metropolitan Mule will be back to review two dishes for our upcoming Fine Dine Fridays.

THE HENRY’S SWING: MEZCAL CLUB MULE

My first sip of this mule had KICK! I am thoroughly impressed with this intimate bar’s “Mezcal Mule.” I always say: “ginger beer makes the mule,” and his mule was made with Vida Mezcal, Ginger Syrup, and Lime. I’d love to know what kind. Either way they didn’t skimp on the ginger.

 The punch is powerful, and I requested my second mule with Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

This was an end-of-the-night mule and I was pleased with the flavor of both. After a long day of lounge hopping and catching up with brilliant friends, the pleasure was all mine to conclude the night at almost 2AM with a new mule. The Mezcal Mule was served in a nice, tall glass. It was different because their choice of ginger had serious kick. Spicy! This conveyed a bold statement about a badass bar. The venue was pretty large, and the atmosphere was exciting and extremely dim-light/ tolerably dark.

This Henry’s Swing Club Mezcal Mule was a total delight and receives 3.9 stars with one star deducted- because of the missing copper cup (the Metropolitan Mule Golden Rule). The environment was completely original. Very edgy, yet classy and a bit luxurious all at the same time. A great place for late night talking with friends or badass networking and drinking. I highly recommend their house mule. I also encourage you to check out the environment at this bar. The atmosphere, for lack of a better word, is just cool. You’re bound to have a good time, socialize, and enjoy very well crafted cocktails and beverages.

My first sip of this mule was slightly less than absolutely delightful. I specifically notified the waitress that I would be reviewing this cocktail online. Mostly I tasted the lime. I couldn’t taste the liquor, nor the ginger beer, but I can tell it’s there.

This mule was prepared icy cold- just how we love it. The Siena Tavern Mule also comes in the proper copper cup! Thank gosh because that would have been an automatic point off. The copper cup honestly saved my experience. I appreciate the chilled cocktails so much more when there is a freezing cold cup of copper containing ice and the mixed ingredients. 

This mule is easily a near-4-star experience. It’s refreshing cold, and I even felt a solid enough buzz afterward. The cup is probably only 8oz which made this a very short drink with ice included. You’ll need another one rather quickly to fulfill your desires for the night.

Siena Tavern Chicago is a very open environment with a close-knit feeling to it. The menu selection is very simple and suiting to the atmosphere. Come here to have a good time and speak loudly. Even on a quiet Monday evening this place is bold and alive with social interaction. On the right night you can catch the place packed to capacity.

The Siena Tavern Mule is a classic. Though I found the flavor a little boring, the copper cup and chilled-to-serve preparation of this mule delighted me. I highly recommend the Siena Tavern mule for a good night out. Drink 3 of these and you’ll be happy you ordered it.

The Grand Lux Cafe has a new spin on the Moscow Mule that they will be adding to the menu very soon. The Metropolitan Mule got to try it first!

My first sip of this beauty was one to remember! A new flavor that tastes absolutely splendid. Our co-founder tried a mule topped with an orange the other day and he said that at first sight, he was disturbed. His mule turned out to be too sweet.

The Grand Lux Strawberry Mule is an avant garde cocktail that could easily be imitated and even poorly prepared by imitators, but the mixologists here knew what they are doing. My Grand Lux Strawberry Mule was sweet enough for the ladies, but probably needs more liquor for the men. The Moscow Mule is generally supposed to be a powerful drink. No matter what you believe- a good mule is always prepared with kick! (A good buzz should hit you halfway through). I only noticed a microscopic buzz after finishing my first mule. My second mule tasted just as sweet, but this time it was perfect! I made a comment about the liquor content and the mixologist prepared another. These refinements were perfect. The liquor balanced out the taste to add the real kick to both the flavor and the feeling!

The Grand Lux Strawberry Mule compliments most all of your desired cuisine choices and is prepared with kettle one vodka and strawberry purine. This mule is served with a strawberry instead of a lime and has an original taste like no other Moscow Mule or cocktail that I have ever tasted. The drink is extremely fruity and served with regular ice. The recipe wasn’t disclosed entirely to us, but I can taste that this is a traditional mule in-essence. The mule is is officially available on the Grand Lux Cafe (Chicago) menu November 3rd, 2014.

This mule is a 3.9/5 Stars!

We took one point off entirely for the missing copper cup. If the Grand Lux Cafe wants to be ahead of the game and premiere a super-star Moscow Mule, then they need the copper cups to refine the absolute taste of this alcoholic beverage. We can’t stress it enough how important the copper cups are to serve your Moscow mule! The copper cups add value, luxury, coldness, and purer flavor.

On a cloudy brisk Chicago evening I ventured to a low key but surprisingly amazing seafood restaurant called Devon Seafood Grill in Chicago’s Gold Coast. As my group and I were first seated, our lovely waitress brought the most delicious Butter Bay Biscuits that I’ve ever had. The pleasant waitress asked me if I wanted a drink so I asked her if she so happened have a house Moscow Mule. She replied, “yes of course let me bring one out to you.”

I was pleasantly surprised to see it arrive in a “Tito’s Handmade Vodka” copper cup! Major kudos to Devon for that additional touch of luxury. We love the copper cup. We believe the copper cup drastically affects the taste of the cocktail. This is one of the best mules I have ever tasted.

My first sip was like a interstellar-space-take-off, and I thought to myself: “what an absolutely amazingly crafted beverage.” The lime, garnish, ginger beer, and vodka was an absolutely enchanting combination. Along with the astonishing array of delicious seafood the Devon Mule felt like more of a fine wine that complemented the food, setting off fireworks for my pallet. I give the (@DevonSeafood) Devon Mule a 4.5 star-rating out of five stars.

The Le Bar Mule from the first sip was an automatic 4.5 Stars! I asked my waitress Natalie to order a Moscow Mule with a double shot of Tito’s Handmade Vodka this time. The results will astound you.

For starters the le bar mule came in a very tall glass. Since the glass was tall, I only took a half-star off for not serving this in a copper cup. I wish I could give this drink a full five stars but the rules are the rules. No copper cup. No 5 stars.

I took a sip of this glory while sitting outside on the Le Bar Patio on Rush street and the environment is exquisite for such a random spot. Le Bar is a component to the Sofitel Luxury Hotel in Chicago. The first sip was full of ginger beer which made me extremely happy. I love the kick of ginger in Moscow mules. That’s the entire point of a Moscow Mule- it should kick your throat with ginger!

As time passed the mule’s feeling set in. The buzz from this one is amazing. This buzz is smooth and steady yet controllable and enjoyable. This mule was fresh and cold with plenty of ice. I even let it water down but the taste prevailed! This means the the preparation of this mule was perfect.

When the ice in your drink doesn’t water down its taste then the drink is a winner! No whiskey stones needed. I am beyond impressed with this mule and I want to see Le Bar show attention to their champion drink and give it an official copper cup! I will probably review this mule again in the future. Until then, the Metropolitan Mule highly recommends the Le Bar Mule for a refreshingly good feeling. Lux Bar,  watch out!

THE 52EIGHTY MULE

On a cool, grey, overcast summer Sunday in Chicago, #52EIGHTY is a top-notch rooftop lounge that conquers the sky-lounge culture that hovers above this metropolitan city. Today my chief operating officer and I are reviewing the 52EIGHTY sky-lounge in Chicago.

We ordered three mules each and for good reason. Each one we tasted got better, and since we ordered them ver a period of 3.6 hours, “the buzz” isn’t what enhanced the taste. for starters the 52EIGHTY mule looses an entire star to our infamous rule: no copper cups, no five-stars. This swanky sky lounge serves their mule up in classic glass. Of course I asked for light ice as usual (for all three). The 52EIGHTY mule was absolutely refreshing. All three mules tasted like refreshing lemonade on a cool summer evening in Chicago.

The lemonade saturated mule isn’t my favorite but the experience you get with it is definitely my favorite. The environment in which you enjoy your beverage is possibly more important than the beverage itself, and 52EIGHTY is one of most amazing environments and settings to try a mule at period. 22,000 sq ft. up in the sky with a the current highest, sky lounge view available in the city. The drinks here can certainly get exquisite and the food most certainly compliments the altitude and the ambiance. The 52EIGHTY mule would have won me over with a lot more ginger to give it a truly carbonated bite, perhaps a little tonic even.

The food is absolutely 5 clean stars offering variety, comfort, and delicacy all in one menu. The service is always on point out of my 5 visits each totaling well over $100 per visit for every two people on a modest budget. Needless to say the setting will cost nicely to enjoy entirely, but you can always order less, and enjoy the view more. Generally the audience is not over crowded and generous seating is available. This is hands down my “favorite” spot in Chicago. For a small gathering of people to intermingle in the out doors with a unique setting.

The buzz of the 52EIGHTY mule is hefty for light drinkers, and solid for seasoned drinkers. Three mules were satisfying enough and my personal tolerance is pretty high, plus I had plenty to eat prior to drinking. I do believe the 52EIGHTY mule can use some special attention to give it a unique twist and I highly recommend it as a featured menu option once they find their flavor.

So today we are tasting food at the Beatrix restaurant and this will be my next critique on Chicago Mules!

My girlfriend tasted this particular mule and said that it has the strongest bite out of any mule she’s tasted so far. I have tasted countless mules already and well, this one is on the dryer flatter side. Beatrix does not serve their Moscow Mule in the traditional copper cup so that is an automatic deduction of one star for me. The copper cup is important and I notice that a lot of restaurants neglect this. The copper cup adds a unique chill to the mule, as well as preserve the taste of all the lime and ginger.

The Beatrix Mule is very naturally served. Classic ingredients with no enhancements or accessories like crushed ice- just a lime, light ice, and the key ingredients. The taste is natural, but strong on the throat from carbonation. I don’t taste the ginger much but I squeezed the lime and this mule takes on a 3.6 star rating after finishing half of it. I like a Mule that I can feel a buzz from by the middle or end of the cup/glass.

The Beatrix Mule possesses great natural flavor giving the mule just enough stars to make it on my “refreshing” list. I recommend it on a sunny afternoon or evening. The cup would have made this mule a 4.6 star mule. The buzz Is delightful and full. So in conclusion. This mule is magnificent with a final 3.6 stars! And one thumbs up. I am satisfied.
